Advanced Placement, commonly known as AP, refers to a program by the College Board wherein students can enrol for university level courses alongside regular high school. It is accepted across several institutions in the US and Canada, and students appear and qualify the AP exam to gain an edge over other candidates.
It is conducted in May every year and high school students receive extra credits by qualifying this exam, which aids them to get into their preferred top universities.
The AP exam covers over 38 subject options - Art History, Calculus, English literature and composition, European History and Human Geography being some of them - from which you can choose your preferred subject(s). The test is marked on the basis of a scale from 1 to 5, and usually a score above 3 is considered decent.
The registration for this exam is completely online and pretty straightforward. A candidate has to register for the AP exam by creating a College Board account. Further, they will be provided an admission ticket after the payment of fees, which has to be carried to the test centres. Once through, the student can sit for the exam in the test centre.
The advantages of taking the AP exam are several. Universities give extra credit points to students who have qualified for this exam. Some universities also give a fee waiver in case of better credits, making it a win-win. Apart from that, students can also skip introductory classes and utilise this time by doing a complimentary course, internship or a double major.
It is highly recommended to appear for the AP exam as it gives you a shove towards your preferred university. But before you sit for the exam, be sure to check that the top university on your list is accepting an AP score.
All the best!
