"It is important to be with people who are good for our soul but it is even more important to find and befriend them." When one crosses boundaries and moves to a foreign land, the transition is massive and things seem new and scary. But the going gets a lot more smoother and enjoyable when we build and nurture valuable friendships.

Over time, friends tend to become our personal support system, our family and a home away from home. Hence, meeting people, breaking the ice and befriending them as an international student is essential, and here are some tips that you will find handy when you go out there to make some friends:-
1.) JOIN CLUBS AND SOCIETIES
Every college has several clubs and societies and in there, there is a place for anyone and everyone. You may either opt to join a society that aligns with your interests or you may want to sign up in a club to explore different opportunities. Societies and clubs provide a great space to meet people with similar or diversified interests - may it be art, music, dance, sports, finance or fashion - which help you to grow both personally and professionally.
2.) BE OPEN TO MULTIPLE FRIENDS GROUPS
It is not wise to put all your eggs in a single basket. As a student living in a foreign nation, you have to be mindful while getting connected with people. It is recommended to be a part of several friends groups, and choose and build your own circle whom you can bet your trust on.
3.) ATTEND EVENTS
Events are an amazing place to make friendships as everyone is new and eager to make friends, which makes connecting with strangers a lot more easier. You may indulge in a small talk for starters and eventually figure out the kind of relationship you want with a particular individual.
4.) MAKE THE MOST OF SOCIALS
Remember that you have the world on your tips. Connect with people over social media and once you feel that someone is safe enough to meet, you may go out for a quick coffee or lunch. In case you want to go big, you can host a house party, invite your friends and check if your vibe compliments theirs. However, keep in mind to trust your instincts when you make friends online and stay safe.
5.) BE WELCOMING AND RESPECTFUL
Making friends is super tough if you stay closed-off and on your own. Be open-minded, even a small 'hello' and a welcoming smile goes a long way. People will always remember your attitude and the way you treated them. Stay respectful and be polite. You may show your true colours once your friends trust you enough to not leave you stranded ;)
When we go abroad, we definitely want to streamline our career but a social sphere is equally necessary, and friends form an essential slice of that circle. Build meaningful friendships because memories with the right people will always remain priceless.
