GUIDE TO IELTS VERSIONS

Introduction:

IELTS, also known as the ‘International English Language Testing System’, is a standardised test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. IELTS is developed and run by the British Council in partnership with IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment English. It is widely recognised and accepted by educational institutions, employers, immigration authorities, and professional bodies worldwide.

The IELTS score ranges on a 0-9 band scale, each band score corresponding to a level of English-language competence. IELTS is scored on a nine-band scale (0-9); an average of all four sections is considered an Overall Band Score. For example, if a student has scored as follows: Listening‏‎ (7 bands), Reading (8 bands), Writing ‏‎(8 bands), and Speaking ‏‎(7 bands), they will be given an overall band of 7+8+8+7= 30/4, i.e. overall 7.5 bands.

IELTS UKVI General Training - This test is for persons who want to relocate to the UK or train or study at a lower level than a degree.

Critical Differences Between Academic and General Training

Academic: Features longer, more complex texts focusing on academic topics.

General Training: Features shorter texts related to everyday life, workplace, and social contexts.

  • Writing Section:

Academic Task 1: Describing visual data or a process.

General Training Task 1: Writing a letter for practical purposes (informal, semi-formal, or formal).
