Know more about TOEFL

TOEFL i.e Test of English as a Foreign Language is a test conducted to assess a candidate’s English language proficiency. TOEFL test can be taken by people of non-English speaking countries like India, China, and many others. It is conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS), a US-based non-profit organization. TOEFL test is accepted by more than 9,000 colleges, universities, and organizations across 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the UK, and the United States.


The TOEFL exam is conducted more than 50 times a year at 4500 test centers in 165 countries worldwide.



TOEFL has essentially two versions:

  1. TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test)

  2. TOEFL PBT (Paper Based Test)


IBT stands for TOEFL Internet-Based Test. The TOEFL Internet-based testing system test is taken worldwide where computers and high internet facilities are available. Most of the test centers had a TOEFL (IBT). Total Exam duration is 2 hours 47 minutes to 3 hours 23 minutes with a 10 minutes break.


PBT stands for Paper Based Test. PBT is conducted where no computers and internet are available. The test pattern and Scoring are different from the TOEFL IBT. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based test) has a duration of 2 hours 30 minutes.


Exam pattern:

Reading

  • 30-40 questions in 50-70 minutes

  • 3-4 Passages answering questions related to it

  • 30 marks


Listening

  • 28–39 questions in 41-57 minutes

  • conversations and discussion, Classroom lectures Recordings are to be listened with great attention and answer the questions based on them.

  • 30 marks


Speaking

  • 4 tasks in 17-20 minutes

  • Express and opinion on a familiar topic

  • 30 marks


Writing

  • 2 tasks in 50 minutes

  • Writing task on Opinions and Arguments Essay

  • Express your opinions on a quarry

  • 30 marks


Total Marks: 30+30+30+30=120


Few tips:

  • First, understand and analyze the TOEFL Exam pattern and refer to a few previous test papers.

  • Read regularly textbooks of universities or other international journals and newspapers that include a wide variety of subject areas.

  • Concentrate on the content and flow of spoken material at the time of listening (Recommended to listen to the podcast every day at least for 1 hour ).

  • Learn grammar and vocabulary and use them naturally while speaking.

  • Make a note of topics that are relatable and practice speaking on them.

  • Learn to Manage Your Time by practicing: practice makes a man perfect!

Many top colleges and universities across the world usually require a minimum TOEFL cut off score of around 80 to 85 (the higher the better). Apart from this, there are many colleges and universities which set the TOEFL cut off score for each section. So, it is always recommended that the candidates should check the correct TOEFL score requirements set by the college/university they are willing to apply to. Exceeding the TOEFL cut off scores will keep you in the safe zone and improve your chances of getting admission to your dream college/university. It is always best to know your target score, as it will also help you in preparing for the TOEFL exam.
