LIVING ABROAD: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

The decision to live abroad holds so much gravity that one needs to consider all possible angles before taking the big leap. Even though many tend to view several things through rose-tinted glasses, all is not hearts and flowers out there, away from home. It is crucial to understand the nuances of living abroad and we have tried to put the lot into perspective.

The very first and perhaps, most important reason to move abroad is diversity in opportunities. Be it a student or a professional, we all want to explore our options and choose the best in the lot. In countries like the US or the UK, there are multiple alternatives and many people even change their fields completely because the possibilities are endless. This not only helps one in building a diversified portfolio and boosting their career, but also aids them to discover their true passion.

There is a significant improvement in soft skills of an individual who lives abroad, which is because of many reasons. When we move away from the comfort of our homes, we are coerced to deal with the world all by ourselves. We have to improve our communication skills, build valuable friendships and carve a personality that stands out in a crowd.

A lot of times, people grow confident and learn to become self-reliant when left to fend for themselves, which is positive for one's self esteem. For instance, you may start cooking or doing your own laundry just out of necessity, which is without a doubt, a life skill and makes you more independent. And who knows, eventually, you might start enjoying these little mundane things in life.

One can culturally grow as an individual when you move out. The world out there is big with people from extremely different backgrounds staying together. We tend to gain insights about contrasting cultures and their distinct features, which makes us appreciate each one of them and somewhere or the other, brings us closer to our own culture and identity.

Living abroad has a myriad of other advantages like helping one to stay within a budget, providing an opportunity to be multilingual and making travel more easier among others. But on the flip side, there are numerous cons to consider as well.

Moving abroad is expensive! Unless you are financially a part of the top 2% in the world, migrating to another nation - no matter the span of time - is going to cost you a pretty penny. But this will not turn out to put a dent in your pocket if you know your finances and understand the importance of budgeting. A simple and effective method is to record your transactions, either physically or digitally and decide on an average expenditure ceiling.

Cultural shocks are something that the majority of us do not like and is a dark aspect of living abroad. Adapting to a new way of living altogether is difficult and many times, you may feel a strong sense of homesickness. I would recommend to just hang in there for some time and make good friends who will help you feel like one of them.

A lot of times, we tend to prioritise other elements over the principal one, because we are lost in the glitz and glamour of a new life. It is important to remind ourselves the prime reason behind such a monumental move and stay motivated towards achieving that very goal.

Living abroad develops a fresh perspective in life, which eventually helps us in figuring out the larger picture. But before you make the big move, make sure to put a good deal of thought into it. Whatever be the case, we wish you the best for your upcoming future.
