Introduction to the Science section

The science section of the ACT consists of 40 questions, which are to be answered in 35 minutes. The test is divided into physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences. It assesses the student’s problem-solving, interpretation and analytical skills. The scoring system of the section is divided into three categories, excluding the overall score.

  1. Interpretation of Data- analyzing data in scientific tables, graphs, and charts.

  2. Scientific Investigation- understand experimental tools, procedures and design.

  3. Evaluation of models, inferences and experimental results- predict outcomes of experiments and evaluate the processes and their validity. It includes data representation, research summaries and conflicting viewpoints.

How to approach it

  1. Time management- This is one of the most essential skills you need, especially since you need to answer 40 questions in 35 minutes. You cannot afford to stay on one question for too long; instead, return to it at the end.

  2. Analysis- Your analytical skill is something the evaluator carefully looks for. Therefore, all data, especially visual ones such as graphs and tables, should be carefully analyzed.

  3. Elimination- This tool is convenient, especially when attempting multiple-choice questions. If you are unsure of an answer, start by eliminating the ones that seem wrong to you before you choose your answer to increase your chances of picking the right one.

  4. Practice- Ultimately, practice and only practice can increase your chances of getting a high score. There are numerous sample questions on the internet; try them out to familiarise yourself with the structure of the section, the type of graphs and experiments you need to work with. Then, solve as many questions as possible and set a time limit to improve your time management skills.

Conclusion

The ACT is not about how many facts you can memorize, but how effectively you can apply logic to the given questions and analyze them to solve problems. While some background knowledge of the sciences is required, the test focuses on multidimensional assessment, so you don’t need to worry about it much. Proper strategizing and time management will definitely help you score high in the science section.
