The education a child gets in school is very crucial in moulding a child’s personality. Besides home, a child spends most of their time learning essential life skills in school. Hence, it is imperative to choose the right curriculum for your child. In India, it can be daunting to choose between IB and CBSE.
Before comparing IB and CBSE, let’s understand what they are.
CBSE, Central Board of Secondary Education, is a national educational body that regulates both public and private schools. This academic body comes under the control or management of The Government of India and conducts board exams every year for students. The number of schools affiliated with CBSE in India is 20,290, which increases every year. It has some disadvantages and advantages like everything does. Some disadvantages would be its emphasis on rote learning and focus on theory, while its advantages would be training a student for competitive exams, accessible across India and usage of both Hindi and English. On the other hand, IB or International Baccalaureate is a non-profit foundation headquartered in Switzerland in Geneva. Founded in 1968, IB offers four programmes, namely:
IB Diploma Programme
IB Career-related Programme for 15–19-year-olds.
IB Middle Years Programme for 11-16 years old
IB Primary Years Programmer for 3-12 years old.
IB Board provides a more standardized worldwide education to a student and focuses more on practical as well as experiential learning. IB Board helps in instilling independence in a child and making them take responsibility of their life and choices.
It promotes concept-based learning rather than textbook learning. The students of IB Board have a slight advantage in exams like SAT and GRE since the students are more analytical.
IB curriculum and its core values help gain admission to a foreign university easier. It is unsuitable if one wishes to pursue a college education in India.
The major difference between IB and CBSE Board is their approach to training and educating students. While IB Boards focuses on practical knowledge-based learning, CBSE focuses on theoretical learning, using an exam–driven system. Some other differences are as follows:
knowledge
IB Board | CBSE Board |
Higher engagement in extracurricular activities | Lower engagement in extracurricular activities |
More recognized in foreign universities | Less recognised in foreign universities |
Syllabus is more balanced and focused on extracurricular like art, music, business administration, etc | Focused on theoretical knowledge of the subjects. |
The fees for this curriculum are very high | The fees is more affordable as compared to IB. , which can be afforded by many. |
Medium of communication is only English | Uses both Hindi and English as a medium of communication |
In conclusion, we would like to remind you that every child has different needs. Hence, there is no "best" curriculum out there. It totally depends on a child's need, aptitude, and interest.
